چکیده

In Japanese, there is frequent alternation between CV morae and moraic geminate consonants. In this study, we analyzed the phonemic environments of consonant gemination (CG) using the “Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ).” The results revealed that the environment in which gemination occurs is, to some extent, parallel to that of vowel devoicing. However, there are two crucial differences. One difference is that the CG tends to occur in a /kVk/ environment, whereas such is not the case for vowel devoicing. The second difference is that when the preceding consonant is /r/, gemination occurs, but not vowel devoicing. These observations suggest that the mechanism leading to CG differs from that which leads to vowel devoicing. key words: moraic consonant, consonant gemination, corpus of spontaneous Japanese (CSJ), reduced pronunciation, W-tag

Consonant Gemination in Japanese Loanword Phonology

The distribution of geminate obstruents in Japanese loanwords appears very complex. Some consonants are more prone to gemination than others, on the one hand, and one and the same consonant is more likely to geminate in some phonological contexts than in others, on the other hand. This paper tackles these problems by considering the relationship between consonant gemination in native words and ...

Vowel devoicing vs. mora-timed rhythm in spontaneous Japanese - inspection of phonetic labels of OGI_TS

This paper discusses two well-known phonetic-phonological phenomena of Japanese, vowel devoicing and mora-timed rhythm. Regarding vowel devoicing as a process of vowels getting consonantal, it may change the mora-templated syllable structures of Japanese, resulting in the deviation from mora-timed rhythm. To investigate spontaneous Japanese with comparison to other languages, the label data of ...

Dependency-structure Annotation to Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese

In Japanese, syntactic structure of a sentence is generally represented by the relationship between phrasal units, or bunsetsus in Japanese, based on a dependency grammar. In the same way, the syntactic structure of a sentence in a large, spontaneous, Japanese-speech corpus, the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ), is represented by dependency relationships between bunsetsus. This paper descri...

Progress of Speech Recognition using the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ)

The report gives an overview of the current state of spontaneous speech recognition using the “Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ)”. It is shown that the large-scale corpus had strong impact in training acoustic and language models considering morphological and pronunciation variations which are characteristic to spontaneous Japanese. Unsupervised adaptation of these models and the speaking ra...

Raddoppiamento Sintattico and Glottalization Phenomena in Italian: a First Phonetic Excursus

This paper is a preliminary phonetic exploration of aspects of the well-known Italian sandhi phenomenon of Raddoppiamento sintattico (henceforth RS), which involves the gemination of word-initial consonants under certain conditions, eg dei [k]ani ‘‘some dogs’’ but tre [kk]ani ‘‘three dogs’’. It is often assumed that RS C-gemination is regular, but there is increasing evidence that it competes w...
